THE CURATED WARDROBESUMMERTIME & SHORTSNot too long ago, you would have been hard pressed to find any "well-dressed" men wearing shorts in public. Those days are long gone and most brands, from affordable to high-end now offer slimmer, shorter shorts that go with everything from a cashmere sweater to a double-breasted jacket.
Despite the range of offerings out there, shorts can still be hard to pull off simply because a lot of guys forget that fit is just as important here as it is with all the other items in our wardrobe. Photo via LesFreresJo

Taking a walk around town, most shorts you come across tend to either be too baggy, particularly cargo shorts, too long that they are almost capri-like or now too short. In the first two instances, after talking with a couple of guys, comfort is cited as the main reason for their choices, whereas I would wager that "fashion" has something to do with the short short phenomenon. As mentioned earlier, however, fit is key whether wearing shorts or a nice pair of trousers.
With the official start of summer and the heat it brings, particularly in the midwest, I personally have found that shorts can be pretty versatile. Whether they are cargo camo shorts as seen above on the right or simple cotton shorts as on the left, the addition of a light-weight jacket or even just a clean white oxford cloth button down can change an entire outfit. The cargo short in particular gets a bad rap because they tend to be the basic that gets paid the least attention. Which brings me to the point that I'd wrap up with; Master the basics. Yea, you can wear shorts with a t-shirt and call it a day, but a ratty, old t-shirt with pizza and chicken grease stains isn't the same as a washed, contrast pocket T. As men, we're elevating our wardrobe game in general, and its time to give our shorts a second look. |
