MATCHING YOUR SHOES TO YOUR SUIT COLORFor those of us who wear suits fairly frequently, whether it be for work or just because we like the way we look in them, we typically gravitate towards the three main shoe leather colors or the 3 B's as I call them; Black, Burgundy and Brown. These colors tend to make up the foundation of the shoe line-up, regardless of whether we select wingtips or tassel loafers.

What I'm hoping to accomplish with this page is to give a pretty straight-forward guide on what shoe colors best work with the five main suit colors that are found in the average man's wardrobe; Black, Brown, Mid-Gray, Charcoal and of course the ultimate staple - the Navy suit. Some of it will probably be considered pretty common sense, but hopefully someone will find some use or guidance.

BROWN
Brown suits pair well with brown shoes of course as well as burgundy shoes. You want to avoid wearing black shoes with a brown suit. A point to bear in mind when wearing brown shoes with a brown suit is that there needs to be a visible contrast. 
NAVY
The navy suit is the workhorse of the suiting world & is also the most flexible of colors. You can pair a navy suit with black, brown or burgundy shoes depending on the occassion. Black with navy is considered the most formal combination, then brown & burgundy. |
BLACK
The black suit is probably the most straightforward when it comes to pairing shoes. You only need one color: Black. My personal opinion is that the black suit is only appropriate at somber or very formal events such as funerals, so the footwear is equally serious. 
CHARCOAL
Along with black, the charcoal suit is the other color that has a no-go when it comes to pairing. Never wear brown shoes with a charcoal suit. Black and burgundy are ideal with burgundy being my color of choice as it is feels more elegant to me. |
MID-GRAY
While less formal than the navy staple, the mid or light gray suit, is equally as versatile when it comes to choice of footwear. All three basic colors of shoes work quite well with a mid-gray suit. Some may consider burgundy not as dressy, but I would disagree. Check out how I wore this here. |
